Decorating window boxes for Christmas is an often overlooked idea for how to use your window box. Many times people will simply empty out and leave their window boxes on the house or take them down and in for the winter, however, for me I do the exact opposite. Christmas window boxes are not only fun to make, they help you accentuate the house in ways that you could never do without a window box. Let's go over some of my favorite ideas.
1. Christmas Wreaths. We've all seen wreaths on doors and windows, but on a window box or front porch planter this idea works just as well. To hang the wreath you will need a metal coat hanger. Bend in around the rim of the planter in the shape of a hook and attach it to the wreath then simply hook it over the front of the box.
4. Red Ribbons. Wreaths and ribbons go hand in hand. If wreaths on the box aren't in the cards then a center ribbon will usually work just as well. You can use the same attachment method as for wreaths. A center ribbon on the front of the box usually works well, but if the box is really long then 2-3 ribbons spaced evenly inside the box is also effective.
2. Pine Tree Clippings and Garland. Since many window boxes are long and rectangular they are perfect for hanging or filling with Garland. You can also recycle your clippings from your Christmas tree and put then in your flower boxes. If you have pine cones they can be added periodically in the box for a cool effect. You can even hang the garland out of the box like vines to simulate a window box feel.
3. Jingle Ball the Way. Large jingle balls in bright reds and gold work perfectly outside in a planter which is ideal for holding such ornaments. Spread them around clippings or garland to help add Christmas color.
5. Christmas Lights. If you have window boxes or planters on your front porch or railing then adding lights is super easy. You can string the lights up the rail and into a front porch railing planter quite easily. A lit garland also works nicely in a long window box.
6. Conifers with Ornaments. Dwarf conifer plants are great not only for Christmas but year round accents for window boxes. They grow a little taller so I like to plant them with spacing and leave room for season flowers that fill out in between and hanging vines. It saves me money when I don't have to replace all the flowers in the box and keeps me from having completely dead window boxes in the off season. Well for Christmas they're even better. Simply adorn them with ornaments and you'll get a nice Christmas tree feel on your front porch. You can also climb them with your outdoor Christmas lights.
7. Sprigs of Artificial Holly. Many people I talk to like to plant evergreens during the winter. When Christmas rolls around you can simply sprinkle your existing flower arrangements with sprigs of artificial holly and it will completely transform your boxes.
