The use of artificial flowers for window boxes is a growing trend for people who have hard to reach windows, busy lifestyles, or secondary properties. They're easier to maintain with less cost in the long run and you never have to worry about having dead plants in your flower boxes. If you are going to go this route just know that to a trained professional even the best fake flower arrangements in window boxes will still look like artificial flowers. However, artificial flower technology has increased in quality a lot in the few years to where your average person can't tell the difference from ten feet away. For your consideration I have put together 4 useful tips:
Tip 1. Invest in quality artificial flowers. For outdoor plants you need to make sure they are UV protected. Without this they will fade in the sun quickly. Some companies sell individual flowers while others offer full arrangements specifically for window boxes. Many vendors are on Amazon making them an easy choice to browse through a good online selection.
Tip 2. Line the box with flower foam to hold your fake flowers. Flower foam is a green foam that works great to hold artificial flowers and will hold up outdoors. You can get it online or at local craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Sometimes you can even break up styrofoam from other deliveries you've received and place it inside your window box. It's a good way to keep styrofoam out of the junk yards. If you can get a liner that fits inside your window box that is even better. Window box liners can be removed so that you can do all your planting from inside the comfort of your house. Window box arrangements can also be kept intact by simply removing the liner between seasons or for when holidays roll around and you want to switch them out.
Tip 3. Come up with a good flower arrangement for your window boxes. You want three things for a good window box: tall plants, filler plants, and hanging vines. Tall plants go in the back while filler plants spread out and add color. Hanging vines or using spiller flowers are great for the front of the window box.
Tip 4. They work great for holiday arrangements as well. When holiday time rolls around you can simply switch out your faux window box flowers with a Thanksgiving or Christmas theme. Just add faux red or green foliage for fall or winter and accent with some pumpkins or wreaths and you can easily make your own faux holiday window box arrangements for little to no cost whatsoever. Faux wreaths work great. You don't just have to put faux flowers and plants in a box, but a center wreath for all seasons works great in the center of the box.
